Sarsfields 5-10 Ballymacnab 5-06

Sarsfields U16s followed in the footsteps of the Under 14 team by progressing through to the championship final after defeating Ballymacnab at Eire Óg.

In a nail biting encounter, described by many neutrals as a superbly entertaining game, Ballymacnab did most of the first half scoring and raced into a not insignificant 3-04 to 1-02 lead after 25 minutes. Sarsfields could have count themselves as being unfortunate considering that one of the goals conceded was an attempted shot at a point which looped into the net.

But in a storming five minute spell, the Hoops left themselves with a fighting chance when Ryan Creaney made a fine save between the posts which eventually lead to Niall Kerr scoring a goal and Stephen McStay added a point after starting a move back on his own fourteen yard line.

A four point halftime deficit at was quickly reduced to three points before Ballymacnab struck another goal. But Sarsfields weren’t to be denied and in a great twenty minute spell the Highmoss took the lead for the first time and built on that lead to go six points clear.

Ballymacnab had no choice but to attack, but other than conceding an arguably soft penalty the defence held strong to see out a memorable four point victory.

The management would once again like to thank the supporters for turning up in numbers and applauding the victorious players off the field.

In the evening’s other semi-final, Madden defeated Tír na nÓg to set up an interesting championship final.
