What a Week for Sarsfields GFC!

Last week was certainly a busy one for any member of the Sarsfields Family. From early on Tuesday morning we had over thirty volunteers setting up for a fun filled week of games aimed at developing the football skills of over one hundred and twenty boys and girls who attended this year’s Dermott Austin Summer Camp. With the help from our underage and senior development coaches, children were split up into 9 groups as members of our Under 16, Minor and Senior teams along with coaches lead various drills and games for our young members of the community. On Thursday, the Summer Camp welcomed double gold Special Olympian Dearbhail Savage to Derrytrasna. Hailing from Clady, Co. Armagh, Dearbhail met with all the young children to show off her silverware in the equestrian disciplines in which she won one silver and two gold medals to bring Ireland up to an impressive 86 medals in this year’s Special Olympics in Los Angeles, USA. Of course you are waiting on me telling you how excited our young children were in seeing Dearbhail’s medals, it was however our leaders who were most ecstatic to see the accomplishments from Special Olympics Ireland’s YOUNGEST member at the age of fifteen!

Friday, being the last day of this year’s Summer Camp was not a quiet affair by any standard. This day marked opening of our new 3G training grounds, officially by Mrs Michelle O’Neill (MLA/ Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development). As she was unable to attend this occasion, we were delighted to welcome Mr Cathal Ó hOisín MLA, Private Secretary to Michelle O’Neill. Lunch was held to thank all those who helped fund and build our 3G pitch as the Summer Camp came to a close. All children received a training jersey for their participation this year and we, the committee, look forward to another successful summer camp next year. We would like to thank in particular our leaders: Enda McGuckin, Jim McAlinden, Kevin McAlinden, Hugh McNeill, Niall O’Hagan, Anna Lennon, Michaela Doyle, Elisha Donnelly, Sean McAlinden (jnr), Oisin Smyth, James McAlinden, Liam McVeigh, Gerard McMahon, Ruairi Blaney, Kiefer Driscoll, Tyler Crawford, Pauline Mallon, Aidan Haughian, Neil McCann, Michael Stevenson, Niall Kerr, Eamon McGeown, Anna Stevenson, Caolan Skelton, Larry Ward and John Haughian. A special mention also goes to Maria Treacy for supplying our leaders with lunch throughout the week, and Fintan McCann and Sonya McAlinden for cooking the BBQ on Friday. Here’s to another successful Summer Camp next year! Yours, Brian Stevenson.
